Candidates working towards their 1st, 2nd and 3rd Degree black belts gathered at UTA Headquarters in Hitchin on Sunday 20th September 2026 for a full day of assessment covering all aspects of the ITF Taekwon-Do syllabus.
The UTA black belt grading brought together the physical skills, technical understanding and knowledge that candidates have developed through years of training. For each student, it marked an important stage in their continuing Taekwon-Do journey.
Preparing for the Grading
The day began at 9:00am with a two-hour pre-grading session, giving candidates the opportunity to work through the syllabus and prepare for the assessments ahead.
This opening session required concentration and attention to detail, setting the tone for a demanding day. At this level, students must bring together their understanding of technique with the ability to perform consistently under examination conditions.
Testing Taekwon-Do Knowledge
Following the pre-grading session, candidates sat their theory examination.
Understanding the art is an essential part of becoming a black belt and progressing through the degrees. Alongside physical ability, students must develop the knowledge that supports their training and helps them understand the purpose behind their practice.
The theory examination formed an important part of this comprehensive assessment, reinforcing the connection between practical skills and Taekwon-Do knowledge.
The Practical Black Belt Examination
After a lunch break, the practical examination began at 12:30pm and continued until 3:00pm.
Candidates were assessed against the requirements for their respective degrees, with the grading covering all aspects of the ITF syllabus. The afternoon demanded sustained effort, technical accuracy, focus and determination.
For those taking their 1st Degree grading, the assessment represented the culmination of their progression through the colour belt grades. For candidates working towards 2nd and 3rd Degree, it was a further step in developing their skills, understanding and maturity as black belts.
A Milestone Built on Years of Training
A black belt grading represents far more than the hours spent in front of an examination panel. Behind each candidate are years of regular practice, corrections, challenges and personal progress.
Preparing for this level of assessment requires commitment, patience and a willingness to keep learning. It also puts the Taekwon-Do tenets of perseverance and indomitable spirit into practice.
We recognise the dedication required to step forward for assessment and the support provided by instructors, training partners and families throughout that preparation.
Well Done to All Candidates
Well done to everyone who took part in the UTA black belt grading in Hitchin, and thank you to the examiners and instructors for their time and commitment.
Whether working towards 1st, 2nd or 3rd Degree, each candidate’s journey is a reminder that progress in Taekwon-Do comes through consistent effort and a commitment to improvement.
